K&F Show Summary: We are back for 2024! Unfortunately, the first show of the year for us will kick off with a memorial tribute to the late great Cale Yarborough. Cale passed away on Dec 31, 2023. He was an ironman in NASCAR certainly, but many of us met him initially due to his guest starring roles during Season 2 and Season 7 of the Dukes of Hazzard.
Instead of re-reviewing both of these episodes we decided to dedicate this episode to telling the life story of Cale himself. (Full links to both of his episodes are below, and we encourage you to listen to them as well.)
There will be facts here that some of you may know, but many of us didn’t. He was the first ever three-in-a-row NASCAR champion, a record only met (and then broken) by Jimmie Johnson. He won four Daytona 500’s, inclyding two back to back in 1983 and 1984. He pioneered CBS-TV’s use of the John Porter-Peter Larson in-car camera that could tilt and pan, footage of which was used in the Season 7 episode he appeared on during the Dukes.
He won the 1983 Daytona 500 in a backup car from a Hardees fast-good restaurant….after flipping his new-for-1983 Monte Carlo in qualifying at 204MPH. He taught himself how to fly an airplane. Possibly most famously, during the first ever flag-to-flag showing of the Daytona 500 on TV, he and the Bobby Allison got in a terrible fight after Cale and Donnie Allison (Bobby’s brother) wrecked for the win on the last lap.

K&F Movie Summary: Christmas Vacation
The last real family man Clark Griswold himself takes on Christmas. When I saw this movie in the theater in 1989 I was the age of Rusty. Now, I’m the age of Clark. I can relate to Clark….I love the lights, I underestimate a lot of things, and like Clark I just want to give my family the perfect Christmas. This movie spawns from the writing genius of John Hughes and the comedic delivery of Chevy Chase and Randy Quaid. Not only does it have the famous scene with the RV dumping into the street sewer, but it has all of the scenes that you can’t help but watch over and over again! Clark drives under a log truck, then gives a speech in the mall about logs that’ll leave you not seeing the line, his idiot cousin in law shows up to annoy him to death, but that huge beastly bulging man ends up bringing him the gift that Clark really needed – his Christmas bonus, and perspective on what really matters. This one is a mele kaliki mai of a good one and short of having the Baby Jesus in a manger, it has everything else I love about Christmas.

K&F Movie Summary:
Two kids who have lost their dad to tragedy are on the very edge of tragedy themselves…the tragedy of not believing! Teddy the older brother is turning to crime, and Katy the younger sister is innocent. They catch Santa in the act at their house, jump in his sleigh, scare the bejesus out of him, lose the reindeer and the presents, crash the sleigh, steal a red 2009 Dodge Challenger, jump it, end up in jail, then a chop shop, and then have to get it all back together by Christmas morning or the world explodes. Even worse, during the chaos they also lost Santa’s magic hat, which is the think that makes the sleigh fly! At the end though they make it just in time to Save Christmas and Santa finally reveals (in the coolest of Kurt Russell moves) that the hat was a ruse. As Santa Claus himself could (of course) fly the whole time and the whole crazy night was to show Teddy – who was suffering from the loss of his dad – how regain the belief in something himself, and something far bigger. If you’re only in it for the cars, the Challenger shines wonderfully. We believe Four Star Motorsports did the prep….and we THINK we have identified the Canadian stunt driver too!

To commemorate our 250th episode we bring you Cannonball Run 2. By today’s standards it’s crass, racist, sexist, and a hilariously offensive automotive escape from reality. Back then though, it just was a crass yet hilarious automotive escape from reality. It stars everyone fun and funny from 1984 as you would expect from Burt Reynolds to Don Knotts to Frank Sinatra. If you liked the first Cannonball Run you’ll love this one….because it’s the same movie. Again. The Rigatoni’s and Fettuccine are in the mob, people pretending to be sheiks only because they have big noses, and John Schneider’s personal Lamborghini Countach makes an appearance with Catherine Bach! The cars are as big as the stars and they do what cars do best: slide and fly. This movie was hated by Siskel and Ebert because they hated movies that don’t make you think. But we don’t need to think. We never did. 10-Stars.

Happy Hazzard-o-ween! This isn’t a specifically dedicated Halloween episode….but it may as well be. Whilst Bo and Luke are hiding from Rosco they get naked and go skinny dipping…leaving their clothes in the General Lee. Seconds later the General is stolen by two crooked gamblers who jump the car (and the clothes) in the pond. Rosco and Enos assume it was Bo and Luke all along, find their clothes, assume they were dismembered, and hijinks ensue when Boss frames them for theft of ….something. Doesn’t matter what. Anyway, to clear themselves they pretend to still be dead and trick Rosco into believing their spirits inhabit the General Lee, which now glows in the dark and appears to drive by itself. Wrongs are righted and it’s nice, funand spooky Halloween episode all around.

This show features our review of the movie Cannonball Run, but it’s really more of a tribute to the late great Burt Reynolds who passed away a few years ago. We loved Burt’s crazy car movies and Cannonball Run was as zany as it ever got. The premise and screen play were a credit to automotive journalist Brock Yates (who makes a cameo in this movie), and then Burt, Dom DeLuise, and Hal Needham took of from there. Alter ego superheroes, cross-eyed proctologists, inappropriate humor (by today’s standards) and ambulances with straight headers are all you need to know. Thanks for the fun, Burt!

Bo and Luke get conned – accidentally – by Cooter – into driving for a bad guy that’s being watched by the stage police, and possibly the feds. What’s he being watched for you ask? Human trafficking? Meth manufacturing and distribution? Ponzi schemes designed to keep little old ladies out of the old folks home and living in the gutter? No….none of those….he’s doing something far worse. This piece of human scum…..is selling…..stolen racing engines! He hides these sweet engines in demo derby cars to transport them out of the county and state, which keeps the feds easily at bay.
Bo and Luke get accused of being a part of it….and they have to drive demo derby cars as a result. And we dear viewers get treated to the sloppy General lee preparation that we love most in this early seasons, including the General Lee I love most – the one they pull up in the race track in. Paul Baxley brings in outstanding camera shots and jumps that would win him an Oscar today, and all is right with the world. 14-inch vectors for everyone!

We came, we saw, we Mopartied! This event has become THE place for Mopar wackos with gather and enjoy all of the weirdness and greatness that Mopars bring. Its also a great place for people that love to thrash their cars on the dragstrip and autocross! We had a great time seeing and hanging out with listeners, as always. The only bummer of the whole trip is that it wasn’t long enough! We will feature several key interviews from the event on this week’s episode of The MuscleCar Place podcast.
This episode also features the one and only Tony Angelo. We all have known Tony’s escapades through his time with Motor Trend with Lucky Costa on Hot Rod Garage, and today he makes his living on his YouTube channel “StayTuned,” which you should subscribe to yesterday if you haven’t already.
He did make the event in his Dodge 440…..barely….and we were there to catch up and see what happened. We also learned from Tony just how badly Finnegan took the news when Corndog let him go from the podcast. No we feel worse. (Kibbe does. Corndog doesn’t. Bernie is indifferent, but happy to still not have to wear pants.)

The Dukes of Hazzard – at the absolute height of it’s popularity and power bring us a double length episode featuring a plethora of terribly painted General Lee’s, a seriously annoying manipulative woman, Dukes fighting Dukes, and a lesson on parenting only Uncle Jesse could give. The Dukes go see a Joe Chitwood stunt show. (It’s not called that in the show directly for marketing reasons, but that’s what it is.) The show is run by it’s second generation owner Diane, a woman who will cuddle up to any man who be be her star attraction driver. When the most recent guy nearly gets killed she suckers Bo into being the next man in. Luke sees through it, Bo gets hot headed and punches everyone in the way, and Uncle Jesse is left to guide a situation he cannot stop, but must direct before his family explodes. Boss and the lead carnival guy both try to kill the General Lee in the process and fail, but the General does what he does best; gives his boys a fighting chance to win the day…and they do by making the 32 car jump.
