Dallas Kibbe Racing:
The Next Step Begins

One of the fun challenges of recording shows ahead of schedule is that sometimes we’re talking about events that haven’t happened yet. As we recorded this episode, Dallas was preparing to make his Late Model debut at Orange County Speedway, a milestone that has been a long time coming. By the time you’re reading this, the race is already in the books, but at the time of recording we were all sitting in that familiar place race fans know so well: equal parts excitement, anticipation, and nervous energy.

It’s been remarkable to watch Dallas continue to climb the racing ladder over the past several years. What started as a kid chasing a dream has turned into a serious pursuit backed by hard work, countless hours in the shop, long nights on the road, and a family willing to make sacrifices to help him compete. Racing has a way of testing everyone involved, not just the driver. It demands commitment from the entire team, and every new opportunity represents another step forward.

We also spent some time reflecting on the recent passing of NASCAR driver Kyle Busch. While most fans knew the confident and often polarizing public version of Kyle, the stories that have emerged since his passing paint a much broader picture. Fellow competitors and friends have shared stories about the father, mentor, racer, and friend behind the public persona. It’s a reminder that motorsports is ultimately about people. The trophies, wins, and statistics matter, but what often endures are the relationships and memories created along the way.

For me personally, hearing those stories reinforced something I’ve learned repeatedly through racing. Every driver has a public reputation, but the people closest to them often know a very different person. As Dallas continues his own racing journey, it’s a good reminder that character and relationships are every bit as important as lap times and trophies. Racing is a small world, and the impact you leave on people frequently outlasts the accomplishments listed on a résumé.

The Dukes Of Hazzard – Episode Review:
“Double Sting” S01E13

This week we wrapped up Season One of The Dukes of Hazzard with Episode 13, “Double Sting,” and after revisiting it yet again, I came away more convinced than ever that this is one of the most important episodes in the entire series. It isn’t simply a great episode—it is the episode where the formula that would define The Dukes of Hazzard finally locks into place.

Think back to the beginning of Season One. The pilot and early episodes often felt closer to Smokey and the Bandit than the family-friendly action comedy the series would eventually become. The stories were a little rougher around the edges. The stakes were often higher. The tone wasn’t always consistent. As the season progressed, however, the writers began discovering exactly what worked. By the time we reach “Double Sting,” the recipe is complete.

You have colorful out-of-town crooks arriving in Hazard County with a scheme. You have Boss Hogg and Rosco getting tangled up in the confusion. You have Bo and Luke trying to unravel the mystery. You have Daisy and Cooter stepping up when the situation demands it. You have action, comedy, car chases, and a spectacular stunt finale. It’s everything people remember about The Dukes of Hazzard distilled into a single hour of television.

The story itself is wonderfully ridiculous in the best possible way. A mysterious traveler named Tom Colt ends up in the Hazard County jail after a confrontation involving the Duke boys. Once inside, he suddenly becomes ill, prompting the local doctor to quarantine the entire jailhouse. Before long, Bo, Luke, Jesse, Boss Hogg, Rosco, and several others find themselves trapped together while an apparent health emergency unfolds around them.

Of course, this is The Dukes of Hazzard, so nothing is quite what it seems.

While the quarantine keeps most of the main cast occupied, a pair of bank robbers disguised as Laurel and Hardy begin executing their real plan. That setup creates one of the most entertaining twists in the episode because it removes many of the show’s usual heroes from the action. Suddenly Daisy and Cooter become the primary problem-solvers, and both characters rise to the occasion.

One of the things I appreciated most during this rewatch was how much responsibility Daisy carries throughout the story. Fans often remember Daisy because of the iconic shorts and Jeep, but episodes like this remind us why the character mattered. She’s resourceful, determined, and every bit as capable as her cousins when the situation calls for it. This episode gives her an opportunity to take center stage, and she absolutely delivers.

The guest villains deserve plenty of credit as well. The Laurel and Hardy disguises immediately establish the comedic tone while still allowing the crooks to remain a legitimate threat. It’s the kind of over-the-top concept that probably shouldn’t work, yet somehow fits perfectly within the world of Hazard County. That’s one of the show’s greatest strengths. It consistently asks viewers to accept outrageous situations and then makes them believable through sheer charm.

Another aspect that stood out during our discussion was the visual style of the episode. We get something remarkably rare for The Dukes of Hazzard: nighttime General Lee footage with the headlights actually in use. Longtime fans know how uncommon those shots are. Most of the series takes place in broad daylight, making these scenes feel unique and memorable even decades later.

And then there’s the jump.

Every Dukes fan has a list of favorite General Lee jumps, and this episode contains one that belongs on every one of those lists. The river jump isn’t merely impressive for Season One. It’s impressive by any standard. Even viewers who aren’t dedicated fans of the show tend to recognize it immediately. The setup, the camera angles, the distance, and the execution all come together to create one of the most iconic stunts in the series’ history.

The more we discussed it, the more I realized that this episode represents a turning point. Earlier episodes were still experimenting. Later episodes would continue refining the formula. But “Double Sting” feels like the moment when everyone involved finally understood exactly what The Dukes of Hazzard was supposed to be.

That’s why it remains such an important episode today.

It’s funny. It’s action-packed. It showcases the entire cast. It features memorable villains, great stunts, and a genuinely clever premise. Most importantly, it lays the groundwork for virtually every classic Dukes adventure that follows. If someone asked me to recommend a single Season One episode that explains why the show became a phenomenon, this would be one of my first choices.

For all those reasons, “Double Sting” remains an easy ten-Corn-Dog episode in my book and a fitting conclusion to a season that was still discovering its identity. By the time the credits roll, there’s no question anymore. The Dukes of Hazzard had found its groove, and television history would never be quite the same.
