Celebrating Robert Duvall:
A Tribute to a True American Original

This episode of The Kibbe & Friends Show is classic Phase 4 chaos — a little heart, a little horsepower, and a whole lot of KF nonsense. We open with a tribute to the legendary Robert Duvall and reflect on what he meant to automotive cinema — especially his unforgettable role in Days of Thunder. From father-figure performances to scenes that still give you goosebumps, it’s a proper send-off to a true American original.

From there, it’s a full current-events swing: Daytona 500 reactions, manufacturer team strategy debates, and whether modern NASCAR still captures the magic of its Super Bowl-level opener. The guys break down what worked, what didn’t, and why door-to-door racing still beats follow-the-leader fuel-saving chess matches every time. Throw in Corndog officially becoming the parent of an 18-year-old, Rob’s questionable ring finger injury, Bernie’s recovery update from the glass booth of emotion, and the usual “how did we even get on this topic?” detours — and you’ve got an episode that covers everything from racing physics to grocery-store corn dogs.

And of course, Bernie on the News returns with recalls, EV sales drops, automotive headlines, and just enough questionable commentary to keep the lawyers comfortably nervous.

From Wrecked to Podium:
Dallas Kibbe Battles Through Chaos to First National Podium at Winter Nationals

Dallas kicked off his first Winter Nationals of the year down in Winter Haven, Florida at Auburndale Speedway — and it was a full-on trial by fire. The week started rough when a yellow-and-black car climbed right up over the nose of his car in a Saturday warm-up race, wiping out the fresh Hoonigan paint scheme in about 20 minutes. Fender, nerf bar, radiator, bumper — gone. But the important stuff survived. The car was straight, the chassis was good, and that meant we could keep fighting. That’s racing at this level: survive the chaos, fix what you can, and go again.

Once the national event started, Dallas showed real growth. He qualified 12th on day one in a stacked semi-pro class with 35 cars competing for 24 feature spots — and he never fell into a B-main position all week. That alone is progress compared to last season. He battled brake failure in one feature, broke a brake line mid-race, spun, regrouped, and learned. By Tuesday and Wednesday he figured out how to make the car turn the way he wanted. The results climbed: qualified 7th, finished 6th; qualified 4th, finished 6th.

By Thursday he qualified second — barely missing the pole to his lightning-fast teammate — and managed the new “no punting” rule with maturity beyond his years. Five straight days of practice, qualifying, and racing culminated in a third-place overall finish for the week. His first national podium. More importantly, his first finished national feature. That’s not just a trophy — that’s momentum.

The Dukes Of Hazzard – Episode Review:
“High Octane” S01E05

Alright — YouTube friends, listeners, and all you fine people who came here for the Duke boys: today’s review is Dukes of Hazzard, Season 1, Episode 5, “High Octane.” Written by William Keys and William Kelly, directed by Don McDougall, original air date February 23rd, 1979. And fellas… this episode is highly awesome. I may have previously said “Repo Men” was my favorite Georgia-era episode, but I’m here to tell you: I might need to take that back.

Let’s start with the opening jump — because it doesn’t ease you into anything. It kicks the door in. The General Lee goes over a semi-trailer like it’s angry at gravity, and the camera work is pure late-70s magic: slow-mo, then a cut to real-time right as the car lands and the suspension sends a message directly to your spine. Cornndog’s point stands: depending on the shot, we’re debating which “Lee” it is — but the result is universal. That car paid the price. And the fact that they reuse variations of this footage later makes sense, because if you’re going to destroy a Charger that spectacularly, you’re going to get your money’s worth out of the film.

The core plot is one of the most Dukes-of-Hazzard things ever: America has a fuel problem, and Uncle Jesse decides it is his patriotic duty to solve it… with moonshine. That’s not a joke — it’s the whole premise. There’s even a contest angle, and Boss Hogg smells prize money like a bloodhound. The best part is that it’s not just “Uncle Jesse being stubborn,” it’s Jesse being principled. He made a promise to stop making shine, but he genuinely believes serving his country is a higher calling. That “integrity vs. necessity” tension is surprisingly strong for a show that also thinks it’s normal to jump cars over moving trucks on public roads.

Then we get the wildcard: revenue agent R. Huntley (played by Carlene Watkins), who is here for exactly one episode and is delightful doing it. She’s sharp, she’s confident, and she’s just enough trouble to make Bo Duke forget how to speak English. The episode gives her real comedic rhythm too — including Uncle Jesse’s legendary delivery when she says, “My name is R. Huntley… Miss Huntley,” and Jesse says, “I believe that.” That’s Jesse in a nutshell: calm, wise, and absolutely not intimidated.

And let’s talk about the episode’s secret weapon: Sweet Tilly — Uncle Jesse’s old moonshine car. We don’t get nearly enough of it, but what we do get is awesome: leaded body, hot engine, racing shocks… and a vibe that says, “This car has outrun the law more times than Roscoe has ruined a pair of pants.” It also quietly reinforces the show’s mythology: Jesse isn’t just an old man on a porch — he was a legend in this world, and Sweet Tilly is proof.

Boss Hogg, of course, can’t just partner with Jesse. He’s running a con inside a con. He wants the shine made, he wants Jesse caught, and he wants the credit. This is also the episode where Boss and Roscoe start sliding into that Laurel-and-Hardy pairing we all love — Roscoe sputtering, Boss smirking, both of them convinced they’re geniuses while the Dukes casually outmaneuver them with a smile and a Plan B. There’s even a great Roscoe line about copper tubing that ends with the kind of joke you definitely don’t get on TV the same way today.

Cornndog brought the deep-cut goodness too — locations, Georgia-era details, and the kind of Charger-nerd observations that make these reviews worth doing. The “Georgia era” has a look and feel you can’t fake: the roads, the light, the town square vibe, the rough edges, the way the show is still figuring out its own rhythm. “High Octane” feels like a perfect send-off for that early run — bigger stunts, tighter comedy, and characters landing into the roles they’ll live in for the next seven seasons.

And the thing I love most: this episode has everything. Patriotism, moonshine, a contest, a con job, a revenue agent, a legendary car we never see enough of, Roscoe being Roscoe, and a General Lee jump that looks like it should’ve ended the series immediately. I’m giving this one Perfect Score. It’s an all-timer.
