The Dukes Of Hazzard – Episode Review:
“Granny Annie” S02E10
Some Dukes of Hazzard episodes have great comedy. Some have incredible stunts. Others remind you that underneath the tire smoke and crooked speed traps, this show has a heart. “Granny Annie” delivers all three—and Rob, Corndog, and Bernie agree: this one earns a perfect 10!
For Kibbe & Friends Episode 383, we revisit Season 2, Episode 10, “Granny Annie.” There’s a counterfeiting grandmother, a replacement Davenport at Cooter’s garage, an appearance by the Oak Ridge Boys, and a General Lee jump that remains one of the defining images of the series.
And somehow, the person Bo and Luke have to save is Boss Hogg.

Granny Annie’s Retirement Plan: Print Your Own Money
Granny Annie is a talented local artist with considerably more creativity than income. Her solution? Put those engraving skills to work making counterfeit five-dollar bills. In her mind, she’s simply saving herself a trip to collect assistance.
Unfortunately, she accidentally pays Bo and Luke with the homemade money after they help with work around her house. The boys unknowingly spend it, and suddenly a good deed has turned into another opportunity for Boss Hogg to put the Dukes behind bars.
But Boss sees something more profitable than an arrest. Granny’s engraving plates could be worth real money to professional counterfeiter Big Jim Downey. Naturally, Boss decides he deserves a piece of that business.
The trouble is that Downey isn’t another lovable Hazzard County schemer. When things go wrong, he’s willing to kill—and Boss has just negotiated his way into a potentially fatal deal.
The Iconic Jump: 230 Feet Over the Railroad Tracks
Let’s get to the orange elephant flying through the room.
“Granny Annie” features the spectacular Oxnard railroad jump performed by Al Wyatt Jr., sending the General Lee approximately 230 feet through the air. In our review, we discuss it as a record-setting jump for its time—and one of the great examples of the real stunt work that made this show unforgettable.
The setup is pure Dukes: railroad tracks, an approaching obstacle, and a Dodge Charger whose driver apparently considers flight a perfectly reasonable escape plan.
The result is a huge airborne shot that lets you appreciate just how far the car travels. But the footage that made it onto television tells only part of the story.
The Radiator Breaks Before the Landing
Corndog points out the fluid spraying from the front of the General during the jump. His explanation: the ramp impact pushed the lower radiator support backward and damaged the radiator.
That means the car was already suffering mechanical damage as it became airborne. The beautiful television moment—a Charger soaring over the tracks—was simultaneously a violent event for the equipment and the stunt driver inside it.
The Landing Wasn’t the End of the Stunt
In the behind-the-scenes account discussed on the show, the road beyond the landing area was supposed to remain closed so Wyatt would have room to stop. A breakdown in communication reportedly allowed traffic back onto the road.
Now consider the situation: the General has just completed an enormous jump, the car is badly damaged, its brakes reportedly aren’t working, and vehicles are coming toward it.
Wyatt had to get the Charger out of their path. The account describes him steering into a parked box truck at the side of the road to stop the car.
Corndog directs our attention to that truck in the behind-the-scenes footage: watch closely, and you can see it rock from the impact. It’s a small detail in the background that reveals just how dramatic the aftermath really was.
Stunt-Crew Humor After a Very Serious Impact
The footage also captures the crew trading jokes afterward. Al Wyatt and Gary Baxley’s banter provides a glimpse of the personalities behind these stunts—and the humor that followed a badly wrecked Charger.
We also discuss why this jump can be confused with another railroad jump performed by John Cade at the same location in the opposite direction.
For viewers, it’s a few seconds of spectacular television. For the people making it, it involved preparation, a punishing ramp strike, a huge flight, and a dangerous landing situation that still had to be brought under control.
That’s why this sequence deserves more than a passing mention. It’s an extraordinary piece of practical stunt driving.
Rosco’s Plea: James Best at His Best
For all the attention the jump deserves, the emotional highlight belongs to James Best.
When Big Jim Downey takes Boss Hogg, Rosco realizes this situation is far beyond their usual games with the Dukes. He gets on the CB and asks Bo and Luke for help.
The boys immediately recognize something is different: Rosco said “please.”
What follows is a remarkably sincere moment. Rosco knows Boss isn’t perfect. He also knows Boss is his brother-in-law, his friend, and someone he doesn’t want to lose.
Best lets the comedy fall away long enough to show how much that friendship means. And the Dukes respond exactly as they should: they put their differences aside and go save him.
That’s one of the reasons this episode works so well. Bo and Luke don’t need Boss to deserve their help. Someone’s life is in danger, and helping is the right thing to do.
A Different Davenport at the Garage
If you’re wondering where Cooter went, you aren’t imagining things.
Mickey Jones appears as B.B. Davenport, one of the cousins who fills in at the garage during Ben Jones’ absence. Corndog discusses the production dispute associated with that period, including the disagreement over Cooter’s beard.
The conversation also explores how filming and broadcast order can create continuity oddities. These early episodes sometimes make changes in vehicles and characters feel less orderly than viewers might expect.
B.B. gets his share of action here, including an early race that leaves Rob and Corndog questioning why the General needs encouragement to keep up with a pickup truck!
The Oak Ridge Boys Come to Hazzard
The Oak Ridge Boys appear as themselves, bringing a musical stop at the Boar’s Nest into the episode.
We discuss this appearance as an early example of the celebrity speed-trap idea that became a familiar Dukes tradition. Its placement is especially interesting: the performance arrives early in the episode rather than serving as a closing attraction.
It doesn’t need to advance the counterfeiting plot. It’s simply another part of the strange, wonderful world of Hazzard County.
We also revisit the covered bridge at Disney’s Golden Oak Ranch, a familiar early-series location that connects this Dukes episode to Kid Rock’s appearance in Joe Dirt.
