TMCP #659: Heidi Bandish of RacerShip | The “Dating App” for Racing Sponsorships?

Featured Interview: Heidi Bandish, Founder of RacerShip

I’ve spent the past few years getting a crash course in the business side of racing. Helping a young driver develop the talent needed to compete is one challenge. Figuring out how to fund that effort, build a recognizable brand, attract sponsors and deliver genuine value to those partners is an entirely different job.

Most people see the driver, the car and the competition. Behind all of that, however, is a small business that must continually find the money, equipment and relationships needed to keep moving forward.

So, when my friend Dan Kahn told me I needed to speak with Heidi Bandish, I paid attention. Dan hasn’t steered me wrong yet.

Heidi is the founder of RacerShip, a motorsports-specific platform designed to bring racers, brands and mentors together. I jokingly described it as online dating for racing, but the comparison made more sense the longer Heidi explained the concept. Instead of racers blindly sending cold emails and sponsorship presentations into the digital abyss, RacerShip gives both sides a dedicated place to find one another and determine whether a partnership makes sense.

From the Classroom to the Racing Industry

Heidi grew up in Southern California and originally went to school to become a teacher and counselor. Her professional journey eventually led her to the Performance Racing Industry trade show, where she began working as a marketing assistant within the sales department.

PRI was a much smaller organization at the time, and Heidi found herself surrounded by experienced sales and marketing professionals. She listened, learned and absorbed as much as she could about the business of motorsports. When the recession forced the organization to reduce its staff, Heidi was the assistant retained to help manage the department and work directly with the company’s president.

That responsibility gave her an unusually deep look at the relationships connecting racers, manufacturers, racing organizations and the businesses supporting the industry.

After leaving PRI in 2013, Heidi moved to Colorado and stepped away from the workforce for a period while raising her family. When she returned to motorsports several years later, racers began approaching her for introductions to people within her professional network.

The requests became especially noticeable during the 2023 PRI Trade Show. Racers and their families recognized that Heidi was well-connected and repeatedly asked whether she could introduce them to potential sponsors or other influential people within the industry. She wanted to help, but there wasn’t an efficient or scalable way to make those connections.

As Heidi walked the show, an idea began to take shape: What if racers, sponsors and experienced industry professionals had a dedicated platform where they could find one another?

That idea became RacerShip.

Every Racer Is Also Running a Small Business

One of the most important points Heidi makes is that a racer isn’t simply a driver. Every racer is effectively operating a small business and building a personal brand.

They must develop their ability on the track, but they also need to communicate professionally, create compelling sponsorship materials, produce useful content, maintain relationships and demonstrate measurable value to their partners. A driver may have tremendous talent, but talent alone doesn’t necessarily make someone an effective brand ambassador.

RacerShip gives racers a dedicated profile where they can present their racing history, results, goals and sponsorship materials. They can upload an existing sponsorship deck or receive help creating one if they don’t already have it. Racers from virtually any discipline can participate, including oval-track racing, drag racing, road racing, motocross and more.

The platform has a familiar social-media feel, allowing members to follow one another, communicate directly and share content within a community built specifically around motorsports. That familiarity is especially important for young racers and their families because it reduces the learning curve and gives them a place where everyone understands the challenges they face.

More Than Wins and Trophies

Another significant part of Heidi’s system is the Racer Score and Brand Fit Report. This provides brands with another way to evaluate whether a racer may be prepared to represent their company.

A racer’s value cannot always be measured by counting trophies. The evaluation also considers factors related to personal development, engagement, career progress and brand readiness. That can be particularly valuable for a young competitor who hasn’t accumulated years of victories but is consistently improving, communicating well and doing the work required to become a dependable partner.

The score can also serve as a conversation starter. If a racer’s score improves significantly from one season to the next, a brand can see that progress and ask what changed. It gives racers a way to demonstrate growth beyond their finishing position at the track.

Most importantly, it encourages racers to think about how a potential sponsor sees them. Are they presenting themselves professionally? Are they producing worthwhile content? Are they engaging with their audience? Can a company trust them to communicate clearly and fulfill their commitments?

Those questions matter because a racing sponsorship is not simply a donation. It is a business relationship that must create value for everyone involved.

Giving Brands a Better Way to Find Racers

The other half of RacerShip is built around the sponsor.

Traditionally, a company might receive stacks of sponsorship proposals through email, making it difficult to evaluate every racer fairly. Heidi wants to give brands the ability to search for racers who fit their objectives instead of waiting for the right proposal to arrive.

Brands can explore racer profiles and evaluate factors such as racing discipline, audience engagement and RacerShip Score. That gives them more control over the process and helps reduce the flood of unrelated sponsorship requests.

It also changes the racer’s pitch from, “Here is my résumé—please give me money,” to, “Here is who I am, what I’m building and why I could make sense for your brand.”

Heidi identified SimpleTire as one of the first companies to embrace the concept. Through that relationship, some RacerShip members received their first genuine brand partnerships.

For a young racer, that first opportunity is about much more than placing a new logo on a car or helmet. It teaches them how to communicate with a partner, meet expectations, create useful exposure and preserve a professional relationship. Those lessons could become increasingly valuable as the racer advances through the sport.

Mentorship May Be RacerShip’s Most Important Feature

Connecting racers and sponsors may be at the heart of RacerShip, but Heidi believes mentorship is another essential part of the platform.

She credits mentors with helping her reach this point in her own career, and she wants young racers to have access to the knowledgeable people she wishes she had known earlier in life. That includes professional racers, driver coaches, marketing specialists, financial experts, nutritionists, life coaches and other people capable of helping racers develop on and off the track.

The RacerShip Academy expands that educational mission with discussions covering sponsorship proposals, brand development, financial planning, mental performance and other subjects racers may not learn from simply turning laps.

Heidi also places particular importance on mental health and performance, especially among children and teenagers. Young racers face pressure from competition, finances, family expectations and the constant need to perform. Giving them the tools to manage those pressures could help them become better competitors and healthier people.

That focus makes sense when you consider Heidi’s background. The teacher in her never disappeared. She simply found a different classroom.

Building From the Grassroots Up

RacerShip isn’t intended only for established professional drivers. Heidi is deliberately building it from the grassroots level, where young racers and their parents may be navigating sponsorships and career development for the first time.

The NASCAR Youth Series became RacerShip’s first racing-series partnership. Heidi is also interested in expanding its reach into Junior Dragsters, MotoAmerica and amateur motocross.

The platform welcomes professional racers as well, although many of them already have established sponsorship relationships. Some participate because they remember how difficult the early stages of their careers were and wish a resource like RacerShip had existed when they were getting started.

Their contributions don’t always need to be formal. A comment, a shared experience or a few words of encouragement from an established professional can have an enormous impact on a young racer.

That kind of interaction is difficult to manufacture, but it can happen naturally when the right people are gathered in the same community.

Can RacerShip Replace the Traditional Sponsorship Pitch?

At the time we recorded this conversation, Heidi said racers could join RacerShip for $5 per month following a free seven-day trial. That is a relatively small investment for access to a motorsports-specific network and the opportunity to improve how a racer presents themselves to potential partners.

Will RacerShip completely eliminate cold calls, emails and traditional sponsorship proposals? Probably not. Racing will always be a relationship-driven business, and personal connections will continue to matter.

What RacerShip may be able to change is how those relationships begin.

It gives racers a structured place to demonstrate what they offer, provides brands with a better way to discover potential ambassadors and surrounds both groups with experienced people who can help make those partnerships successful.

Racing talent may get a driver noticed, but talent is only part of building a sustainable career. RacerShip is designed to help racers develop everything else.
