TMCP #645: John Kairys on AACF – Saving the Automotive Aftermarket When Life Hits Hard

Featured Interview:
John Kairys – Automotive Aftermarket Charity Foundation

Every once in a while, we get to share something that goes beyond cars—and this is one of those episodes. Today’s guest is John Kairys, Executive Director of the Automotive Aftermarket Charitable Foundation (AACF), and what they’re doing for the people in this industry is nothing short of remarkable. Founded back in 1959, AACF was built on a simple but powerful idea: when someone in the automotive aftermarket hits a hard moment in life, the industry should be there to help them through it.

We’re not talking about abstract “good intentions” here—we’re talking about real, immediate support when life gets real. Illness, serious injury, loss of a loved one, natural disasters, financial hardship… the kinds of things that can knock anyone off their feet, no matter how strong or prepared they are. And what makes AACF different is how quickly and effectively they respond. This isn’t a slow-moving system buried in red tape. It starts with a simple pre-application, and in many cases, decisions are made within 24 hours. If approved, support can be in someone’s hands in about five days. That’s not common—and it’s incredibly needed.

John walked us through how it works, and the reach is broader than most people realize. If you work anywhere in the automotive aftermarket—technician, service writer, parts counter, warehouse, delivery, management, or even corporate—you may qualify. The requirement is straightforward: one year with a single employer in the industry, or three years across multiple. From there, the goal isn’t to “fix everything”—it’s to provide that critical first step forward. The “on ramp,” as John described it. Grants typically average around $4,000 and are used to stabilize the essentials—rent, utilities, car payments, basic living expenses—so people can regain their footing and move forward.

And the stories behind it are what really bring it home. One that stuck with me was a single mother working as a technician, raising three young kids while battling cancer. Even with insurance, everything started to unravel—missed work, mounting bills, and the constant pressure of just trying to hold life together. AACF stepped in and helped cover rent, utilities, and transportation—giving her space to focus on her health and her family. That’s the difference. That’s what this foundation does.

What’s also incredible is how lean the organization is. It’s essentially John and one operations manager, supported by a deeply committed volunteer board made up of people across the industry. And yet, they’re helping families all over the country—quietly, efficiently, and with a level of care that’s hard to find. Their biggest challenge isn’t the desire to help—it’s making sure people know they exist.

So here’s the takeaway. If you’re part of this industry—and chances are, if you’re listening, you are—this matters to you. If you or someone you know is going through a tough time, don’t wait and don’t assume there’s no help available. Go to aftermarketcharity.org and start the process. It’s simple, it’s confidential, and it’s there for you.

And if you’re in a position to give back, there are ways to do that too. You can donate directly, become part of their Aftermarket Hearts Giving Circle (even small monthly contributions make a difference), or get involved through their events and classic car sweepstakes—this year featuring a beautiful 1969 Pontiac Firebird. But just as important as anything—help spread the word. Share this episode. Tell someone in your shop. Let people know this exists.

Because at the end of the day, this industry isn’t just about cars. It’s about people. And AACF is one of the best examples of what happens when we take care of our own.
