FEATURE INTERVIEWS
This week is the second of two shows from SEMA 2012 and I have four final interviews to share with you. First up are two amazing discussions about some incredible custom cars and then two informative interviews regarding complete wiring kits for the venerable 4th generation GM LS engines.
1. Mike Atkins, Pratt and Miller Restorations. I met Mike Atkins from Pratt and Miller Restorations and we talked about the beautiful 1968 Apollo Camaro. The Apollo was specifically built for the president and CEO of Discovery Channel’s birthday. This car is a tribute to the Apollo Space Program with many cues on the car to that era. From the rocket emblems on the grille, wheels and horn cap to the custom exhaust openings that resemble rocket boosters it is definitely a sight to behold. Some of the mechanical goodies Mike let me know about are Heights independent rear suspension, Detroit Speed front suspension, Wilwood brakes, and the LS/RS engine making 760 horsepower and 840 ft lb of torque. 2. Murray Pfaff, Pfaff Designs. I caught up with friend of the show, previous interviewee, and legendary auto designer Murray Pfaff and found out more about his history and the building of the 1959 Imperial Speedster. Murray talks about his beginnings in industrial design and how he worked his way into designing custom cars for a living. The Imperial Speedster is Murray’s personal project and his own car and the friends he has made over the years came to help him out in spades building this fabulous creation. The car started as a four door and was cut in half in five times at least once in each direction. The Speedster took 10,000 man hours over three and a half years, and has appeared in many magazines, videos, and posters. 3. Ed Monte, MSD Ignition. Jeff Allison and I chatted with Ed Monte about MSD’s new Atomic EFI system for LS engines which also won Product of the Year at SEMA 2012.. This new system is not only for running the engine, but for aesthetics as well. The master kit moves the wiring up into the fuel rail area and keeps a very clean engine bay with less wiring exposed. The Atomic EFI LS kit can be installed in a garage over a weekend with just normal hand tools. It comes with a mini programing tool to make tweeks without paying a programmer or sending the controller back and forth through the mail. Check out MSD’s website at http://atomicefi.com/
4. Rusty Sampsel, Chevrolet Performance. Jeff Allison and I met Rusty Sampsel at the Chevrolet Performance booth and asked him about the GM LS Controller kits. Rusty informed us about how the LS kits are an easy way to get an LS engine installation running and driving smoothly with no hassle. The harnesses are designed to only plug in one place and all connection points are labeled for easy installation. The kits include the engine control module and since it was designed and built by GM, any scan tool can read the data just like on a normal GM car. When I asked him about tuning the computer, Rusty said that the module programming is self adjusting and will handle a huge variety of situations and is a plug and play solution.
