Dan Roth, Associate Editor, AOL Autoblog, Autoblog Podcast co-host

This weeks interview is with Dan Roth, Associate editor of Autoblog and co-host of the uber-popular Autoblog Podcast. Since I know that a lot of you out there enjoy automotive podcast shows, I thought it might be fun to have someone on the other side of the business (i.e. new car coverage) on the show to talk about what it’s like to drive and discuss modern vehicles!

Like a lot of us, Dan grew up reading auto magazines and many of his earliest memories are of working with tools with his grandpa or listening to the soothing sounds of a VW engine in a Karmann Ghia.

At the age of 12 he wrote a letter to William Jeanes, editor in chief of Car and Driver, asking how to become an auto writer. He received a two page letter back and has unconsciously been following the advice in those pages ever since! While he is the co-host of the Autoblog podcast today, his initial approach in joining the company was as a listener looking to help improve the sound quality and production of the show. It’s been his full time career for several years now.

Two legendary Z28’s – the 2014 and the ’67!

During our discussion we chatted about two cars in particular that AutoBlog has covered recently: The new Camaro Z28, and the new Ford Mustang.

In regards to the Z28 compared the power output to the ZL1. Even though the Z28 has less horsepower than the ZL1 it’s focus is different, more aimed at lightness, speed, and handling as compared to the brute force of the ZL1. Dan also noted that the Z28 is truly a race car first, and a street car second.

We also discussed the 2015 Mustang, and in his opinion it’s a car we’ll have at least another five years of Mustang news to look forward to thanks to  special edition Mustangs that will invariably follow along (Shelby’s, Laguna Seca editions, etc.).

For those of you out there that just can’t get enough automotive audio shows, Dan has started his own auto podcast called the Extra Mile and it is in the style of “This American Life” and other NPR radio shows where it tells a story and uses voice and music to do so. You can check it out at iTunes or ShoutEngine.

You can reach Dan through Twitter https://twitter.com/Boston_Auto or you can follow his new podcast at https://twitter.com/XtraMilePodcast

Thanks for the great interview Dan!
