TMCP #635: ASK RICK! – FIFTY YEARS of National Parts Depot! The REAL Story of Surviving and Thriving in Restoration Parts

National Parts Depot is celebrating an incredible milestone — 50 years in business — and we’re sitting down with Rick Schmidt for a special Ask Rick episode to talk about the journey that built one of the most respected names in classic car restoration. From its humble beginnings in a family basement to becoming a global leader in restoration parts, Rick shares the story of how his father Jim Schmidt built NPD through hard work, vision, and a relentless commitment to serving enthusiasts. We also dive into Rick’s leadership philosophy, the evolution of the restoration market, and what the next fifty years may hold.
It’s also auction season, and Rick is ready to help us make some money. We break down what it takes to buy right, sell smart, and turn a profit with a quick flip. With a goal of keeping the upfront cost under $30K, Rick walks us through which cars make sense to chase at the January auctions — and which ones to leave on the block. If you’re looking to sharpen your auction strategy, this is an episode you won’t want to miss.

Dukes Review:
Actor Jonathan Frakes plays “Jamie Lee Hogg”….but of course he is better known to millions of loyal Trekkies and Commander William Riker of the Starship Enterprise (1701-D). That’s right. This is the Star Trek to Dukes of Hazzard crossover that will have Ryan Brutt and I on the same side of the fight….until this episode is over, of course.
Plot: Boss Hogg’s umpteenth previously unnamed nephew shows up in Hazzard to make some ill gotten gains…only to accidentally fall in love with Daisy Duke. That’s all well and good except Boss Hogg, Uncle Jessie, and all of the evil business partners are against it…and to make things worse, the evil guys want Daisy killed before she learns too much! But then the Hogg wants to marry the Duke and the evil partners think it’s so sweet. This leads to every body panel on Rosco’s patrol car being surgically removed in a hilarious fashion, a massive car chase, a few recycled car jumps, and a remarkable amount of improv by Tom and John. Oh, and they don’t get married and live happily ever after, either. And by next weeks show this will all be long forgotten!

KF Episode Summary:
This is our Tribute to the late great Gene Hackman! While he’s not a car star to us all his movie The French Connection is one the most iconic of it’s day. For many of us, he’s the best part about dozens of movies that we have loved for over 50 years!
From The French Connection to Hoosiers, The Replacements, Crimson Tide, even The Royal Tenenbaums, Gene’s acting chops marked him as one of the best actors to ever grace the big screen. He’ll be missed.
As we learned doing research, Gene actually WAS a car guy and had done a considerable amount of racing. He followed in the footsteps of Paul Newman and fell in love with amateur/celebrity racing initially, trained at the Bob Bondurant school, and eventually became involved with Dan Gurney for celebrity and professional races with TOYOTA.
We discussed Gene’s awesome career in the episode and included a re-broadcast from The Kibbe and Finnegan Show where we had reviewed “The Replacements”. This movie is the story we all want; a chance to live up to the potential of something that we loved from our youth and maybe came close to achieving, but for whatever reason failed at, or it fizzled out, or it just ended for reasons we couldn’t control. Keanu is honestly pretty good as a south-paw quarterback and it’s a great movie full of inspirational one-liners you’ll love to quote. Here’s one for you: “Pain heals, Chicks Dig Scars, and Glory Lasts Forever.” K&F Show Rating: 8 Corndogs!

K&F Movie Summary: This is proof that a Will Ferrell comedy – with the same humor as a Will Ferrell comedy – and the same production crew as a Will Ferrell comedy – and a star studded 2009 comedy cast – without Will Ferrell in the comedy…..is somehow just not as good. Jeremy Piven plays Don “The Goods” Ready, a Mercenary car salesman leading a crew of wild and crazy car movers. They’re the people dealers call in when then need the lots emptied. Think of them as the A-Team, with less guns and waaaaaaaay more smut. When i chose this movie I thought – hey – a movie with a great cast and great humor potential – and great cars….and what I got was……a movie I didn’t hate but will likely never watch again. At least they have a Bandit Trans Am reference. That’s something. 6 Dogs!

KF Show Summary: This is the episode that will make you say the N-Word, 3 times! That’s right, I’m talking Nitrous, Nighties, and Nathan Warren. This is the episode where Cooter tries to prove he can build the fastest car in the county…..but only by ripping Bo and Luke apart to do it. Cooter trips on a pebble and shatters his ankle, forcing Luke to Drive his ‘68 Chevelle against Bo in the General Lee. Cousin against cousin. Car against car. Mone e mono. And while their egos started writing checks their butts couldn’t cash…eventually they had to concede that while they couldn’t not try their best to win, the each always wanted to see the other succeed. And they ended wit two broken cars crossing the finish line, one forward, one backward, in a photo finish tie of cousinly love, making all the wrongs right. Also, nighties need to make a comeback. KF Show Summary: If there were one episode – that had THE jump of the General Lee – it would be this one. This is the final episode of Season 1 of the Dukes of Hazzard, and what started just a few months ago as a more redneck version of Smokey and the Bandit has become the car hoppin’ comedy western we all wanted…..with tassels in just the right spots. Hazard County is robbed by the likes of Laurel and Hardy impersonators, done under the ruse of a fake health quarantine of all the government officials by an illness. The illness was supposedly highly dangerous…but in the end was just a case of poison ivy that was totally misdiagnosed, causing the tax payers millions. This episode has it all – comedy – jumps – and well placed tassels. In addition, there are NO scenes that utilize in-car green screen! Rating: 10 Corndogs

Movie Review: Joe Dirt. This is it! If you have been waiting months or years for us to finally review this movie, your days of suffering are now over. Here it is in all it’s glory. This may be the perfect movie for a show like ours to actually review because, #1 – it’s dumb, #2 – it’s funny, #3 – it has great cars, and #4 – this movie is told, in audio story form, from a radio station, with everyone glued to their audio listening device. This was a time when real stars were on the radio….which we’re just going to claim as old-school form of a podcast. It may also be (in a way) the redneck cousin sequel to our favorite movie Tommy Boy as well (listen in for details).

This week I spoke to Rick Katzeff, CEO of ExoMod. Their company is creating all new “1968 Charger bodies and applying them to brand new Hellcat Dodge Challenger shells. The end result is a new creation that drives and performs like a new car, but with the looks of the classics. Seems easy enough, right?
