FEATURE INTERVIEW
This week’s podcast show guest was Steve Sinnard, Vice President of Hurricane Motorsports and the Scranton Manufacturing Company. Hurricane is a company that produces a fantastic Cobra replica kit and it turns out they’re based in Lake City, IA, which is just a few miles up the road from me. The interview topic itself was done via a suggestion from Paul Proefrock who not only listens to The MuscleCar Place podcast show regularly but is also a Hurricane owner!
During the interview Steve gave the history of Hurricane. It originally started years ago as a different company, but the original body mold of the was done from an original car itself and has always been highly accurate. The company changed hands a few times, and by the time the Scranton Manufacturing Company acquired it it had matured into a very thorough kit with a highly active owners group who even have their own forum! (As a wonderful twist to the story, the Scranton Manufacturing Company has a massive amount of experience in manufacturing chassis and fiberglass bodies. They’ve been producing refuse truck and veterinary truck bodies for years! When the opportunity came available to purchase Hurricane they thought it was a perfect fit.)
Steve and crew spent the first 6 months of ownership of Hurricane revamping the marketing platform for the kit (website, etc.), but more specifically went to work in improving the kit itself. They invited several current Hurricane Owners to their facility in Lake City to ask for their feedback on how to improve the car overall. They then added in as many of the improvements as they could, such as adding an aluminum fuel cell, making the foot boxes larger and more accommodating, improving the gel-coat laid onto the body, and countless other improvements.
They produce two different kits currently. The first is called the 427 Roadster, is priced at $21,500, and is the classic hood-scoop and sidepipe design most people would think of. The kit comes with absolutely everything one would need to build the car including exhaust, brakes, and even all of the fasteners! The owner only needs to supply the engine, transmission, driveshaft, wheels & tires, paint, and a battery. The second kit is called the 427 Roadster Street and includes everything from the first kit with the addition of a smooth hood, full bumpers, under-car exhaust, and a few other items. This kit retails for $22,495.
Thanks for the interview, Steve! I look forward to coming up soon for a “test drive!”
