My SEMA display car from this year – a Camaro named ‘Redemption’

Well, it is that time of year again when the schedule gets filled up in a hurry with shopping, putting up a tree, dragging out old decorations, parties, and spending time with those we love. It’s a strange time of year and is one that is full of expectations. There is this feeling that things are winding down for the year, but at the same time there is certain anticipation for what 2012 will hold. This anticipation looks different for everyone; I have friends that are getting married, expecting children, needing jobs and caring for aging parents.

Be sure to keep in my what REAL success is – and where you find it!

For me expectations are high for continual growth of my small business. April 2012 marks the one-year anniversary since we opened the doors. The shop is full, we are fortunate enough to be incredibly busy, and I don’t think that is by accident. It took calculated steps with the exact timing and faith to get things moving and now we are in a new season of growth. The wisdom that applied last April is obsolete now.

It’s like raising my son Alexander. He is two and a half and incredibly smart. Things change so fast in his world and he continues to blow me away with new insights almost daily. The same is true for the business owner as well. Information is coming at us so quickly we that have to decide how our time will be spent in any given day. I don’t have a marketing director or a facilities manager, but those things still need to get done. When I put on the marketing hat should I spend time on automotive forums, LinkedIn, Facebook, or updating photos on my own website? Now there’s Foursquare, and I don’t even know what that is!

Here’s my challenge for those wanting lasting change in life, whether it be a business, a job, or shedding a few pounds. Don’t wait until January 1 to plan those changes. Start now before the New Year arrives so you can gain momentum into this new season. Read good books and allow growth to happen. Create goals that are attainable and well defined. Just saying, “I want $20 million dollars in gross sales and more customers next year” is not attainable nor is it a specific target. Enjoy the process and celebrate the victories along the way. Have a heart of thanksgiving.

In our consumer driven society it is hard to live life content regardless of circumstance. My happiness should not be dependent upon how much money is in my bank account or if I have a really cool truck in the driveway. It should depend on my relationship with the one whose birthday we are celebrating.

Here’s to a great 2011 and an even better 2012!
