Today’s Topic – Garey Keyes on How He Created an Automotive eBay Sales Consulting Business

Gary's '68 Dana Tribute Car

In this episode of C4AL we have a special guest on the show – Gary Keyes. Gary is someone that I (Rob) got the chance to meet while interviewing him on The MuscleCar Place Podcast about his incredible 1968 Dana Camaro Tribute car.

After that interview completed Gary shared with me that he had an interesting part-time business that he’d created as (essentially) a classic car sales marketing consultant. Since there is no way that I could better sum up Gary’s e-mail about it to me, so I’ll post it here as he wrote it:

Over the last 4 years or so I have been representing owners of Hot rods, Street rods, Muscle cars and collector cars in the process of selling their rides for them.  At first I did it on the side as extra mad money, which helped pay for a good portion of the Dana I built.

It has grown over time and I found myself unemployed a year and a half ago when the engineering firm I worked for pretty much ran out of money.  Over the last 16 years I worked in high tech data and telecom communications most recently in the SmartGrid space dealing with electric utilities.

Due to my age I found that I am in the group now that no one seems to want to hire so I have concentrated on finishing the Dana over the last year and a half and putting more time into my hobby turned business.

Frankly I am tired of the corporate world, travel and generally overall BS and egos when it comes to outside professional hi tech sales.  I really don’t miss it and I am very fulfilled with my new business knowing that I love cars so I get exposed to a multitude of cars, making friends and making a living at it at the same time.  I earn less money, but I am much happier and enjoy what I do with my time.  Over time I feel I can reach and or even exceed what I used to earn.  Now I can build something for myself rather than being in the position of someone taking away what you have worked hard at to build.  I feel blessed.

During our interview Gary shared with me exactly how he created his business, how he put together his client list, what he charges, and even what he makes! I’d like to personally thank Gary for coming on the show and being so open. If you’d like to reach Gary you can do so by giving him a call at 509-993-6918. He also goes by the handle ‘keyesg’ on eBay as well.
